Work is continuing on a 168,000-square-foot United Parcel Service distribution center located along Heybourne Road.

First announced in March 2023, the expansion is projected to create 15 jobs over the first two years it’s in operation after being approved for $965,509 in tax abatements by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

“This expansion will improve the region’s connectivity within UPS’s worldwide package and distribution network and better align it with UPS’s other activities,” state officials said.

Workers will earn an average of $34.96 an hour.

“This company will make $19,650,969 in capital equipment investment within the first two years of operation and generate $4,200,497 in new tax revenues over the 10-year abatement period,” officials said.

According to the Douglas County Assessor’s Office, the property was purchased by Prologis L P for $6 million in September 2022.

The permit lists the original job value at $4.44 million.

Layton Construction is the contractor on the project.

Airport Advisory Committee Chairman Al Browne said that the FAA isn't permitting through fence access to airports.

Any major expansion, including a tower or extension of the airport's runway would require voter approval after the passage of a ballot question in 2010.

Work is expected to begin on a new airport master plan that would remove some of the more controversial elements.
