Early voting ends Friday; 40 percent of Carson's registered voters may vote early

Carson City Clerk Recorder Alan Glover expects around 40 percent of the capital's registered voters to vote before Tuesday's election.

As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, 5,262, people had voted in Carson City compared with 3,728 voters at the same time in 1998. Glover had expected about 5,000 to vote early, but said Wednesday he expects to see 6,000 local voters before early voting ends Friday.

Generally, Glover said about 1,000 people vote via absentee ballot. This year, 2,350 have voted absentee so far. About 9,000 of Carson's 22,724 voters could vote before Tuesday, Glover said.

Regionally, early elections results are up as well.

About 160 Storey County voters had voted by Wednesday at 5 p.m. Sarah Jensen, county deputy clerk treasurer, said about 220 people voted early in 1998. There are 2,666 registered voters in Storey County.

"We've been averaging about 10 a day, so we should be pretty close to what we had in 1998," Jensen said.

Early voting ends Friday at 7 p.m. in Carson and Douglas County, at 6 p.m. in Storey County and 8 p.m. in Lyon County.

Lyon County Clerk Treasure Nikki Bryan had no early voting numbers available Wednesday, but said about 1,500 people voted early in the 1998 election. Lyon County has 17,298 potential voters.

"We've had a pretty good turnout this year," Bryan said. "We've been really, really busy. I've been going out to the other areas and they're busy, too."

Douglas County Clerk Barbara Reed said there have been about 4,800 early voters as of today.

"We are above four years ago when we had more than 3,000 early voters," she said.

Reed said she mailed out a record 2,700 absentee ballots for this election.

"That is the highest we've ever had."

Between the two, turnout for the general election has already exceeded the 6,100 votes cast in Douglas County's primary.
