MARKLEEVILLE - Federal officials cleared the way for continued operation of the Markleeville Public Utility District sewer pond and repair of the Markleeville Campground waterline.
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Supervisor, Robert Vaught issued a permit to repair damage done in the 1997 New Year's flood.
The flood eroded some of the slopes between the sewer pond access road and Markleeville Creek, jeopardizing the road and sewer pipeline. The sewer line remains threatened until the slopes between the road and Markleeville Creek are stabilized. The road construction and stabilization will include placement of materials and equipment in Markleeville Creek. State and federal permits will be required for this activity and will include provisions to minimize effects to the stream.
This same flood event also destroyed the water supply line to the Markleeville Campground in this area. Since the flood, the campground has been operating under temporary repairs.
"The water line is currently hanging in open air and the plan is to bury it in the road where it can be protected," according to Gary Schiff, Carson District Ranger.
