Highway 89 wreck in Tahoe has one fatality, two injued

A wreck on Highway 89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows left one person dead and two seriously injured Sunday around 5:15 p.m., Placer County Sheriff's Department reported.

Jeremy Joseph Nevin, a 24-year-old from Mountain View California who was suspected of drunk driving near Commons Beach in Tahoe City, fled from California Highway Patrol bicycle officers attempting to run them over.

Nevin drove northbound on Highway 89 at a high rate of speed until he hit a car head on. A husband and wife in the car Nevin hit had to be careflighted to Washoe Medical Center with one in critical condition, the other in serious condition.

CHP bicycle officers at the scene of the wreck identified Nevin, who was found dead at the scene, as the man who tried to run them over.

Law enforcement officers had to close Highway 89 for more than two hours to investigate and clear the scene, Placer County Sheriff's Department reported.
