Man surrenders in killing of Brink's guard

ONTARIO, Calif. - The man suspected of shooting and killing a Brink's armored car guard during a Bank of America robbery last month has surrendered to police.

Joe Henry Abbott, 31, of West Covina turned himself in to Ontario Police Department officers Wednesday afternoon. He was booked for investigation of murder, armed robbery and burglary, and was being held without bail, Detective Mike Macias said.

Police were still searching for another suspect, Edward ''Monster'' White, 31, also thought to be of West Covina, Macias said.

Police had sought the two in connection with the Oct. 30 killing of Brink's armored car guard Samuel S. Saenz, 25, of Hesperia, who was shot to death as he picked up a bag of money from a Bank of America branch.

Saenz was leaving with the money when a robber came up from behind, shot the guard in the head and ran outside to a waiting car. The killer and the driver of the waiting car escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Abbott is suspected of being the gunman, and White is suspected of playing a major role in the crime, possibly as the getaway driver, Macias said.

The stolen money has not yet been recovered, he said.
