New phone books in, old ones being recycled

The Governor's Mansion appears on the first Carson City Nevada Bell cover.

Cover photos for the Carson City and Reno/Sparks phone books were unveiled at the Mansion on Monday morning.

Nevada Bell spokeswoman Tonya Drake said delivery of the phone books started Monday and residents should look for them to arrive sometime this week.

The Carson City directory will be organized so that Carson listings will appear in the front of the book. The cover photo of the mansion was taken by retired Pacific Bell employee Robert Chapin of South Reno.

"The contents are the same (in both versions of the phone book), they're just in a different order," she said.

The unveiling also kicked off the phone book recycling campaign, the country's largest statewide recycling program.

Phone books are collected from Nov. 6 to Dec. 2 at several locations around Western Nevada.

"Nevada Bell is pleased that our phone book recycling program has become such a success over the years," said Marsha Lindsey, president of Nevada Bell. "About 40 percent of the current Nevada Bell directory is made from recycled phone books, and through partnerships like this we help to preserve Nevada's valuable natural resources and landfill space."

Marked bins for old Nevada Bell directories will be at Scolari's stores, Nevada Bell offices, RSW Recycling and U.S. post offices in certain rural communities.

The recycling campaign was started in 1991, following the redesign of the Nevada Bell directories to create an easily recycled product containing environmentally friendly inks, glues and paper coatings.

Only Nevada Bell directories will be accepted during the recycling program. About 300,000 copies of the phone book are distributed to 50 communities.
