Outhouses will rumble down Virginia City's C Street Saturday as the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce and Coor's Beer present their Fifth Annual World Championship Outhouse Races.
Festivities begin at noon with a parade down C Street, and afterward kids and adults are invited to try their luck at the toilet paper toss and corn cob plunge for $1.
But the highlight of the afternoon ensues at 2:30 p.m. when about eight homebuilts will be lining up for their heats. The outhouses will be grinding their way along Main Street (uphill) from the Bucket of Blood parking lot to the Delta Saloon parking lot.
Trophies will be presented for first, second, and third place, and the winner will be offered a slot in the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City. About eight outhouses are presently signed up for the event, which draws 3,000 spectators.
Outhouses must be at least 9 square feet at the base, and 6 feet from the floor to the highest point of the roof. They must include an operable door, and at least one hole complete with occupant.
A maximum of two participants are allowed to push the vehicle, which can have any number of wheels of any size, and some type of device for the crew members to grasp while racing for that finish line.
The vehicles operate without brakes, and it is recommended that only the very spry gather at the finish line.
A limited supply of T-shirts and special edition Outhouse Hot Sauce will be available in the Bucket of Blood parking lot. T-shirts cost $15, or two for $25, and hot sauce is $5 a bottle. All proceeds go to the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce.
