Adult Basic Education moves to WNCC

It will now be easier for students enrolled in basic education classes to make the transition to higher education.

The Adult Basic Education Department, which includes English as a Second Language, is in the process of moving from the Stewart Center on the south side of town to the Bristlecone Building on the Western Nevada Community College campus.

"It will be a really positive thing for students," said Anne Hansen, director of marketing and information at WNCC. "It will be good for them to be able to get acquainted with the college."

Hansen said there are three desired results for those who enroll in basic education classes.

They are to get a job, get a better job or enroll in higher education classes.

Hansen said that for about 10 years the department has not been able to be on the WNCC campus for lack of space.

However, with the recent addition, there will be more room to include the basic education department.

Although classes will now be held on campus, alternative locations will still be available.

Classes will be held in Carson City at Gleason, Mark Twain and Empire elementary schools, FISH, Wyman-Gordon, Nevada Hispanic Services, Hi-Tech Center and Nevada State Library.

However, Hansen said it is important that students register on the WNCC campus so that they can get a feel for the college.

"We want them to feel comfortable here," she said.
