Local breast cancer foundation to give grants

The Northern Nevada Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation will announce $50,000 in available grants for local breast cancer programs at a press conference and reception at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harrah's Reno-Robert A. Ring Convention Center, Third Floor.

On June 1, the foundation will begin accepting grant applications. These funds will be targeted for local breast cancer education, screening and funding non-duplicate breast cancer outreach and treatment programs for the medically underserved.

Berry-Hinkley Industries, a distributor of Chevron products, will be represented as a major race sponsor for the second year with a contribution of $15,000. Nevada State Senator Bernice Martin Mathews and former U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Vucanovich will be serving as the local Race 2000 Honorary Cochairs with Bonnie Bryan as the Founding Honorary Chair.

The Northern Nevada Race affiliate will kick off the second annual Northern Nevada Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure(r) scheduled Sunday,Oct. 15 at Washoe Village at South Meadows.
