Police arrested a man early Monday morning who pretended he had a weapon and demanded money from a gas station attendant late Sunday night, but left with nothing more than a carton of Marlboros, the Carson City Sheriff's Department said.
Alvin E. Smith Jr., 32, an eight-year resident of Carson City with no fixed address, allegedly walked into the Chevron gas station at William and Carson street about 11:55 p.m. Sunday night and asked for a carton of cigarettes.
When the clerk gave him the cigarettes and asked if he needed anything else, Smith allegedly said, "Yeah, give me all your money," according to Chief Deputy Scott Burau.
The police report states, Smith placed his hand in his pocket simulating a weapon and threatened to "pop" the female clerk, then took the cigarettes and attempted to leave the store through the west entrance which was locked. After exiting through the east entrance, Burau said Smith headed south on foot.
At about 2:10 a.m. Smith was seen riding a mountain bike near the Frontier Motel. No weapon was found.
"He had a carton of Marlboros hanging out of his pocket," Burau said.
Smith is being held in the Carson City Jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.
