Safe grad gets donation, seeking volunteers

With the latest donation of $1,500 from National Best Sellers, Carson High School's safe grad committee members are breathing a financial sigh of relief.

But the pressure is on to try to find volunteers for the sober graduation celebration.

"Getting volunteers has been a real stress point," chairwoman Diane Schnaser said. "We really need them."

The party will start around 6 p.m. after graduation June 8 and will last all night with a variety of activities at the Carson City Community Center.

At 4 a.m. Sunday the seniors will load on buses to Great America.

Chairwoman Karen Hohl said volunteer positions are nearly filled for the initial party, but chaperones are still needed for the trip to the amusement park in California.

"It's just a fabulous opportunity for anyone who wants an expense-paid trip to Great America," she said.

The latest donation brings business donations to about $20,000 and parents have donated about $7,000.

But with 311 students planning to attend, committee members said they still need about $2,000 more.

This was the second year National Best Sellers donated to the safe graduation celebration.

"It is so important to keep the kids safe on graduation night," said real estate agent Kathy Tatro. "This is a phenomenal program."

The agency raised the money to donate through its Boot Scootin' Barbecue.
