Carson City closed a portion of Lompa Lane Thursday, starting a major project to redirect water and sewer pipes underground as part of the city's freeway construction.
Traffic will be redirected for at least three weeks as closures continue in the Lompa Lane, Long Street and Carmine Road area.
Drivers in the area are being rerouted through Airport Road, said city senior engineer John Benzing.
The utility relocation project work began with a closure of one lane of Highway 50 East in the area. The contractor is expected to clear the highway lane closure in one week.
Local traffic will be allowed on Lompa Lane as far down as Long Street for about the next 10 days, Benzing said. After that, Lompa will be closed at Carmine, except to residents of the mobile home park and apartment complex at Long Street.
"We've been working with the apartment manager and the mobile home park," Benzing said. "All residents have been notified."
The city is working on relocating massive sewer and water main lines to accommodate future freeway access in the area.
After work progresses past the apartment building, work will begin in the Northridge Drive area in front of the future Boys & Girls Club of Northern Nevada. Lompa Lane will be reopened to traffic at that time, Benzing said.
