Deputy shoots self at firing range

SILVER SPRINGS -- A Lyon County sheriff's deputy apparently accidentally shot himself in the leg while holstering his weapon Friday afternoon.

Deputy Paul VanDiver, 26, of Carson City, injured his right leg at 2:11 p.m. at the Sheriff's Department weapons qualification range in Silver Springs.

Central Lyon County Fire paramedics and Care Flight helicopter responded to the incident.

It appears the incident occurred while VanDiver was reholstering his weapon while shooting at the range, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.

He was treated by emergency medical personnel and then taken to Washoe Medical Center. At press time he was in good condition and was set to be released Friday night, according to hospital personnel.

VanDiver has been with the Sheriff's Department for two years.
