ELKO, Nev. (AP) -- A wildland fire north of Elko was contained late Friday after threatening a subdivision and temporarily shutting down a key road linking Elko with Idaho.
But firefighters' work in northeastern Nevada was far from over as at least one other fire broke out late Thursday.
Fire officials said the Schell fire quickly spread to 700 acres after it broke out just past noon on Thursday, but held at that size overnight.
It burned through dry brush and grass along Adobe Summit about two miles north of Elko.
Despite extremely dry conditions and afternoon winds, it was contained Friday night and officials hoped for control this weekend.
Containment means the fire is not expected to expand further. Control means it's out.
Bulldozers cut fire lines and engines we stationed near about 100 homes in the Adobe Heights subdivision and northern Elko.
The flames skirted the homes and no evacuations were ordered.
Four air tankers from Wells and Minden and from Pocatello, Idaho, aided some 125 crews from seven agencies on the lines.
The fire jumped the Mountain City Highway and North Fifth Street at times on Thursday.
Its cause remained under investigation, but there was no lightning in the area at the time the fire broke out.
However, lightning strikes late Thursday sparked another fire about 30 miles southwest of West Wendover.
The Goshute Peak fire had burned about 200 acres and was being fought by smoke jumpers, a helicopter, and engine and a water tender. About 20 people were fighting the fire.
Meanwhile, the 2,200-acre Robb fire in northwest Reno was declared controlled on Thursday. That fire Monday night came within yards of some residential neighborhoods.
Forecasters are calling for a possibility of thunderstorms statewide for the next week.
