A man sought by police for being in a girls restroom at Fremont Elementary School earlier this week, told police he was ill and urgently needed the bathroom when a student spotted him, authorities said Thursday.
"While the subject used extremely poor judgment in choosing a restroom, we don't believe he had any wrongful intent," Carson City Sheriff's Chief Deputy Steve Schuette said.
Monday, two fifth-grade girls told a teacher they saw the man looking over the stall at them.
When they went to tell a teacher, the man left the building, got into a truck and drove north on Saliman Road. Police were unable to locate him.
Schuette said the 19-year-old Carson City man, whom he didn't identify, saw a report on the incident and came forward.
"The subject was interviewed by several investigators. His reason for entering the school was to use the restroom," he said. "It was confirmed he was sick and needed the immediate use of a restroom and decided to enter the school."
The man underwent a lie detector test and was found to be truthful, Schuette said. "He passed the polygraph with flying colors," he said.
He said the reason the man used the girls bathroom was because there were already boys in the boys bathroom.
A report will be submitted to the District Attorney for review.
