Joseph Martin

A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Carson City for Joseph Martin, 83, of Carson City. Mr. Martin died May 12, 2004 at his home.

Born March 19, 1921, in Chester, Penn., to Michael and Frances Hallevk Martin, Mr. Martin's father emigrated from Russia and his mother from Poland.

Mr. Martin grew up in Philadelphia, where he attended school through the 11th grade. He had to quit to take care of his younger brothers and sisters. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He married Winnona Peterson on Feb. 27, 1945. He served in the Army until 1946.

Mr. Martin worked as a carpenter until he retired. He was a member of the Northern Nevada Carpenters Union Local 971.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Carson City.

He lived in Kuna, Idaho, and Lake Tahoe, before moving to Carson City.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Egenolf, a brother Andrew, and a son, Jack.

He is survived by his wife of Carson City; son Clair Crawford of Vallejo, Calif.; daughters Barbara Sawyer of Carson City, Tressa England of Carlsbad, Calif.; sons Delbert Crawford of San Jose, Calif., Marvin Crawford of Dixon, Calif., and Darrell Crawford of Winters, Calif.; sisters Rachel Jordan of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Helen D'Angelo and Frances Martin, both of Philadelphia; brothers Michael, Harry and Johnny, all of Philadelphia; 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be 7-8 p.m. Sunday at FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Carson City. Burial will take place 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Gardens in Caldwell, Idaho.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home of Carson City is in charge of arrangements.
