Susan Hartwick Strolin

Susan Strolin, 58, a Minden resident and longtime Carson City teacher, died Sept. 13, 2004, following a six-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born June 15, 1946, in Burlington, Vt., to Robert and Helen Gleason Hartwick.

She attended elementary and high school in Burlington and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a bachelor of arts degree in special education.

Mrs. Strolin was a special-education teacher in Carson City for 20 years, first at Eagle Valley Middle School then at Carson High School. She was voted teacher of the year at Eagle Valley Middle School in 1990-91 and twice won the Carson City School District's Light of Education award for her outstanding work in the classroom.

She loved the outdoors, especially hiking and kayaking. She also enjoyed reading, Reiki, tai chi, gardening, photography, American Indian rituals and spirituality, cross-country skiing and biking.

She was involved with numerous organizations and activities dedicated to environmental protection and the welfare of needy children. She and her husband traveled extensively.

She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph C. III; father; father- and mother-in-law, Joseph and Paula Strolin; and brother-in-law, Ray Strolin.

Among her survivors are her husband of 37 years, Joe, and son, Andrew, both of Minden; mother and brothers Robert and Timothy Hartwick, all of Burlington, and Peter Hartwick of St. Augustine, Fla.; sisters-in-law Colleen and Ray Ann Hartwick of Vermont, Michelle Hartwick of Florida, Barbara Badger of Mundelein, Ill., and Lynn Strolin of Schroon Lake, N.Y., and Fountain Hills Ariz.; eight nieces; eight nephews; and numerous grandnieces and nephews.

A private celebration of life is being planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Child Survival Project in Mindanao, Philippines, addressed to Catholic Relief Services, 209 W. Fayette St., Baltimore, MD 21201-344 for project 1550-1983 with the description "Health Services for Women and Children in the Philippines."
