The Carson City Library is temporarily closing the Children's and Teen Sections for re-carpeting Sept. 12-17. All youth services will be suspended during that time. A small amount of youth and teen materials will be available for browsing, but most requests will not be filled.

The youth computer resources will also be unavailable. The two areas will be rearranged and will reopen on Monday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m.

The Carson City Library is located at 900 N. Roop St. in Carson City. Hours of operation are 10 a.m.-6 p.m on Monday, Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Learn Safe Driving at community college

Western Nevada Community College continues its Driver Training Program with another four-day, 30-hour non-credit course that meets the training requirements to obtain a Nevada driver's license. The classes meet on Saturdays, Aug. 27, Sept. 10, 17 and 24, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. They are open to anyone age 15 and over.

The class combines lectures, class discussion, guest speakers, films and an all-new computerized driving simulator to cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and driving maneuvers in various environments and situations. The course is supported by the Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool, the Public Agency Compensation Trust, and State Farm Insurance. The fee for the class is $95.

Reno-born author releases Hawaii-themed children's book

Mora Ebie, born in Reno, is releasing her first children's book called "Kai: The Little Honu Who Didn't Know He Was Brave" this October from Mutual Publishing. The story is about a little green turtle with an overactive imagination that is easily frightened by things in the sea. But what does he do when a real scare presents itself?

University of Nevada, Reno open house

Students interested in attending UNR are invited to attend one of two open houses. The first is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 22, with the visit with faculty starting at 6:30 p.m. The second open house is scheduled to start with a visit with the faculty at 10 a.m. followed by the program at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 24.

The events will occur in the Jot Travis Student Union. From Interstate 80, take exit 13, the Virginia Street exit, and go north. Parking is available in the Brian Whalen Parking Garage. The program will have information about UNR's campus and programs. There will be an opportunity to visit with admission representative and current students and faculty. Information on financial aid and scholarships, housing and admissions will be available. Seniors can bring their transcripts to see if they qualify for admission. There will be refreshments, and drawings for prizes, university clothing, and application fee waivers.

Zunino appointed director of Reno Fire Science Academy

The University of Nevada, Reno Fire Science Academy has announced the appointment of Gary Zunino to director of the academy, where he will oversee daily operations of the state-of-the-art training facility and campus in Carlin, Nev. Prior to his appointment, Zunino served as program development specialist at the academy.

Zunino has more than 19 years of service with three Nevada state agencies. Most recently as the northern regional manager for the Nevada Division of Forestry in Elko, he was responsible for administration of all programs for the northeastern portion of Nevada, including the management of all resource, fire, dispatch, emergency services, fiscal and personnel within the region. He has also managed three county fire districts.

A lifelong resident of Nevada, Zunino earned his bachelor's degree and master of science degree from the University of Nevada Reno.

He has been involved in fire fighting, emergency response and program management for more than 25 years.

Zunino is a founding member of the Nevada Fire Safe Council (NFSC) board of directors, a member of the Elko County Public Land Use Committee, past president of the Nevada chapter of the Wildlife Society, and is a certified wildlife biologist. He lives in Spring Creek with his wife and son.
