Community puts its best foot forward for kids

I can't thank the community enough for contributing to the Easter Shoe Drive. We have only 60 pairs of shoes left to purchase.

Shawna Ellis, a senior at Carson High School, needs to be recognized for her special senior project. Shawna is raising money to help adolescents who need basic things such as clothing, hygiene items, books, etc. Her mentor is a child-protective-service worker who sees children pulled from their homes without these necessary items.

Shawna has collected more than $1,000 with the help of community members such as Adele's Restaurant, Cracker Box and Rupert's Car Restoration and Repair, just to name a few. She will purchase shoes for Carson High School students in the special-needs program. It's great to see so many senior projects this year that are directly aimed at enriching the lives of others.

Allison Joffee rallied the First Judicial Bar Association to purchase numerous shoes for homeless students. They should be thanked for always finding a way to help children, not just inside the courts but outside as well.

So many of the local lawyers volunteer their time to provide legal representation to Volunteers of Rural Nevada.

They deserve to be thanked for the many hours of civil legal representation they provide in cases involving adoption, name changes, guardianships and for the many other services they provide behind the scenes.

The next event is for those in our community who could use a good laugh. Soroptimist International has a night at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall April 16 featuring two great comedians: Grace White, aka "Old Hippie Chick"; and Alberto Vallejo.

These comedians have performed throughout the industry. White launched her career at the onset of her "Middle Ages" and has gone on to open for the Jefferson Starship, 3 Doors Down, Edgar Winter, Leon Russell, Father Guido Sarducci and Kevin Pollack. She made her film debut in "The Independent," starring Jerry Stiller and Janeane Garofalo, and has appeared on "Good Morning America."

Enjoy complimentary champagne and chocolates while Grace and Albert provide a dose of great comedy.

Here is an event that all three of my children have enjoyed throughout the years. The 14th annual Fred Alexander Memorial at Empire Ranch Golf Course teaches youngsters about the joys of golf.

It is a really great, free event, and all the golf instructors donate their time to encourage children.
