Obituary: Phyllis L. Dryden

Phyllis L. Dryden, 63, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at her home in Carson City. She passed peacefully and attended by family.

She was born September 1947 in Adams County, Ohio, to Marion and Dorothy Dryden.

Phyllis graduated from Manchester High School (1965), Ohio University (1970), and Ohio State University (1979).

Her childhood in Appalachia instilled a profound respect for the value of education and she spent her life providing educational opportunities to others, especially those who fell outside of mainstream educational efforts.

Phyllis began her work as a classroom teacher, but soon her drive and talent for organization led her into educational administration. During her career she had the good fortune to work with many talented and dedicated individuals. Together, she and her teammates worked tirelessly and successfully to expand educational opportunities.

Throughout her life she received many awards and commendations and in 2010, the year she retired, she received the "Bill Trabert Memorial Award" for lifetime achievement in education.

In addition to success in her career, Phyllis was a loving daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother. Though often far from her loved ones in miles, they were always close at heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Dorothy; and brothers Ricky and Johnny Dryden. Phyllis is survived by two children, Ryan and Julie; one grandchild, Alexis; and five beloved sisters, Judy, Marilyn, Edna, Nancy, and Brenda. Capitol City Cremation is in charge of final arrangements.
