Auditions set for 'Once Upon a Mattress'

Wild Horse Children's Theater is looking for actors, singers and dancers ages 12-21 for the spring musical production of Once Upon a Mattress.

Auditions will be at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 and 10 a.m. Jan. 28 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Callbacks will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 29. Auditions are by appointment only, and auditioners must call for an audition slot.

Performances will be on the weekends of May 4-20 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Rehearsals will begin Feb. 8 and will be held from 4:15 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Cast members will get a full rehearsal schedule at the first rehearsal. Tuition is $100 per actor.

Auditions will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 2 and at 10 a.m. Feb. 4 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Auditions are by appointment only.

Performances will be on the weekends of May 4-20 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, along with performances at the museum for local school groups. Rehearsals will begin Feb. 18 and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Cast members will get a full rehearsal schedule at the first rehearsal. Tuition is $65 per child.

4-H awards ceremony planned

The Carson City/Storey County 4-H awards ceremony will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Road. A potluck supper will be held before the ceremony, which will recognize youth and leadership for participation and achievement. Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish to share, and each club should bring three dozen cookies for dessert.

Dress code for the evening is white shirt, green tie and dark slacks or skirt. Clean jeans without holes or stains are appropriate as is business attire. For more information, call 775-887-2252.

Travel Club plans trips

For people who like to travel, the Silver Sierra Adventures Travel Club offers the opportunity to take day trips as well as longer trips.

The club meet the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m. Jan. 17 upstairs at the Carson Nugget.

WNC offers special presentations

"Desire and the Landscape," "Beyond the Image" and "Affirmations: A Writer's Truth," by Sarah Whorf, will be exhibited from Feb. 6 to March 9 in the Main, Atrium and College Galleries of Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Parkway.

"Desire and the Landscape" portrays Whorf's ideas about creating balance and survival strategies in landscapes that have manipulated as a result of people's desires. "Beyond the Image" portrays the natural world in mixed-media digital prints and shows visual richness of the natural world while drawing the viewer's attention.

WNC's creative writing students, Lone Mountain Writers and Ash Canyon Poets present "Affirmations: A Writer's Truth," a testament to the creativity and support shared among Northern Nevada's writers.

A reception for this event will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. March 8 in the Main Gallery. For more information, call 775-445-3000.

Footprinters to meet

The Carson Valley Footprinters will hold its monthly dinner meeting Jan. 19 at the Casino Fandango in Carson City. A no host bar starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Dems to hear from library director

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will hold its monthly meeting Jan. 14 at Grandma Hatties Restaurant. Featured speaker is Sara Jones, Carson City Library director, who will talk about the planned Knowledge and Discovery Center and the BRIC.

Attendees are asked to arrive between 11:15 and 11:45 to order off the menu, as no food or beverages will be served once the program starts at noon.

Short story workshop offered

"Short Story Writing" is back at Comma Coffee's new arts classroom, Between, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays. The class lasts eight weeks, from Jan. 11- Feb. 29, and costs $90, with a $10 discount for returning students. At the end of the class, all students who complete the writing assignments will be published in a book of collective works.

Students will learn to write quality work with their own style and flair, and will create several short works. They'll learn to improve their writing skills, how to peer edit, how to submit work to a publisher and more.

Instructor Deana Hoover is a local author whose books include Sing to the Moon, Poems From an Ordinary Life and Good Morning World. Auditions scheduled for theater group

The Misfits Theater Group will hold auditions at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Dayton Valley Branch Library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road. The spring production of "Sin, Sex, and the CIA" is written by Michael and Susan Parker and directed by Gail Gundersen. The production is described as "a complex laugh-out-loud farce about the hillarious antics of a CIA agent and a U.S. undersecretary who attempt U.S. negotiations with a small island where huge oil reserves have been found."

Artist's Way creativity course offered

The Artist's Way is a 12-week free course in discovering and recovering your creative self, and is designed for anyone experiencing creative block, or who would like to self-explore and discover their own unknown creativity within.

The Artist's Way was developed and authored by Julia Cameron about 20 years ago. The best selling book has inspired millions to overcome the limiting beliefs and fears that can inhibit the creative process.

Reception, show planned for young artists

A Northern Nevada Young Artists' reception will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery, 220 A W. Telegraph St.

Irish luncheon, program to be presented

The Carson City Senior Citizens Center invites the public to a luncheon and presentation by Lady Carolyn Loftis on "Grace O'Malley, Ireland's Pirate Queen." Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at noon on March 2.

An Irish lunch menu will be provided by Carson Plaza. This is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and other senior programs.

U.S. Navy League to hear from commanding officer

The Carson City Council of the U.S. Navy League will hold its bimonthly meeting Jan. 18 at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Highway 50 East. The social hour is at 5:30 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Speaker will be Col. Phillip W. Chandler, commanding officer of the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 and is a civilian organization with more than 50,000 members dedicated to educating U.S. citizens and elected officials about the importance of sea power to U.S national security and supporting the men and women of the sea services and their families.

The Carson City Council sponsors and supports Navy and Marine personnel at Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center near Bridgeport, Calif., and the Naval Air Station in Fallon, as well as the Carson High Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Command.

Carson City photographer John Warden has a show of his works at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery, 449 W. King St., through Jan. 26. Learn to do the West Coast swing

Those interested in dancing can make new friends while learning the increasingly popular West Coast swing dance, starting Friday at Yaple's Ballroom, 315 N. Carson St. Donna Ewing teaches a six-week course in two levels of swing. Beginning is at 7 p.m., and intermediate starts at 8 p.m.
