Suspect in unlocked vehicle burglaries ID'd

A predawn check of a suspicious vehicle with a juvenile and a woman sleeping inside led to the arrest of a 19-year-old Silver Springs man in connection with a rash of unlocked vehicle burglaries on the northwest side of Carson City.

The car in which the two were sleeping early Monday had numerous items that were allegedly stolen, including a camera, credit cards and check books, according to the arrest report.

Detectives later determined that Samuel Mendoza had been with the two found in the car, and called him in for questioning at the sheriff's office. Under questioning, Mendoza admitted that he and a few others had come to Carson City to burglarize vehicles, according to the arrest report. Mendoza was charged with one count of vehicle burglary, and his bail is $25,000.The 13-year-old juvenile also was also arrested and the woman was released.

The case is still being actively investigated. Victims who have not yet filed a report can either file one at the sheriff's office or call dispatch at 775-887-2011.
