Yesterday afternoon at a quarter to six the town was alarmed by the harrowing whistle of two locomotives at the V&T Depot. The signal was not understood until it had been continued for several minutes when the Warren and Curry engine companies hurried to the depot. The Yerington flume, a mile and a half west of the depot was on fire...and in 20 minutes was a mass conflagration. (continued on Tuesday).

The fishing up at the Lake is not as good as usual now, the trout seeking deep water on account of the heat. About the only good fishing is at the Hot Springs and McKinney’s, where the water is deep enough to be cool. The trout are wonderfully sensitive thermometers.
