NHP stepping up patrols on U.S. 50

The Nevada Highway Patrol has stepped up enforcement efforts on U.S. Highway 50, representatives said Wednesday.

These efforts will focus on citing speeders, according to a news release. Troopers also will look closely for other violations, such as reckless or aggressive driving, driving under the influence, following too closely, talking or texting on a hand-held cellphone and lane-change violations, the release stats. Violaters will be cited as part of a “Zero Tolerance” approach.

Troopers, deputies and police officers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, Lyon and Douglas county sheriff’s offices, and Reno Police Department are receiving funding for the enforcement campaign from a joint “Joining Forces” grant through the Office of Traffic Safety.

The primary emphasis will be voluntary compliance through high visibility, followed by zero tolerance for moving violations, the release states.
