WNC’s free summer lecture series returns to observatory

Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory will present a series of free slide lectures starting today and continuing every Saturday through Aug. 23. Doors open at 7 p.m.; lectures are held at 7:30 p.m.

Mike Thomas will give a tour of the solar system on June 14. The lecture offers a journey outward from the sun to the far reaches of the solar system. It offers information about planets, moons, asteroids and comets.

Thomas will talk about the International Space Station on July 12. The presentation provides an overview of the station’s early design stages through present day.

John Dykes, a resident photographer, will talk about photographing the night sky on July 26. He will explain the process of astrophotography and provide slides of his work.

Thomas will present about aliens in the movies on Aug. 9. The program includes images of aliens that have become icons of popular culture.

Thomas will talk about space exploration, including the search for planets orbiting distant stars, on Aug. 23.

The observatory’s Saturday Star Parties, which offer free telescope viewings, will also continue each Saturday. For more information, call 775-445-3000.
