The Capitol Square. The prisoners at the State Prison are engaged in getting out a large lot of blocks of stone to be used in the construction of the wrought iron fence which is to be erected around the Capitol Square, Carson City. The iron posts or uprights of the fence will be anchored in these blocks of stone.

130 years ago

Wrecked at 23. In another column is a graphic picture of a young man, the son of a Nevada millionaire, who at 23 is a miserable besotted wreck. This young man, who is known to everyone who reads this, had a most unfortunate start in life. He had the misfortune to have a father with millions. (Continued on Tuesday.)

New and powerful submarine begins its reign of terror. A new and powerful German submarine torpedoed and sank the British steamer Netherlands off Beachyhead on Monday. The crew was given time to escape.

A huge collection of priceless Jewish manuscripts, paintings and other cultural objects stolen by Nazis all over Europe today were recovered by the Fifth division at Hugen.

The staff of Carson High School is now complete. Contracts have been accepted by Grace Bordewich, Morse Burley, Frank Brown, Kenneth Farmer, Edith, Fritsch, Nellie Laird, Harold Martin, Margorie Ann Price, Alfred Saliman, R.E. Walker, Ada Wells, Clara Wallace and R.G. Whittemore.

Gov. Grant Sawyer signed into law Nevada’s first full-fledged Civil Rights Act saying it is proof of the flexibility of man’s mind.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
