Volunteers needed for ESL program

Regarding the Jan. 2 commentary regarding blessings to others, I’d like to congratulate Cathleen Mital on her new job as United Latino Community’s program director. I’m excited to see that ULC has joined us in carrying out an English as a second language program of its own and pleased to see more flexibility for residents who need and want to improve their English abilities.

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank Cathleen for her service to ESL-In Home Nevada and am pleased to see that her training with us has helped in this outreach.

Our common goal is to reach as many people as possible with this much-needed services.

ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada was established in 2004 as a nonprofit volunteer service organization. It exists in five Northern Nevada counties (Carson, Douglas, Washoe, Lyon and Churchill counties).

The organization provides tutoring services to anyone who wants to learn or improve their English skills, learn computer literacy, prepare for their high school equivalency test (GED and others), and prepare for U.S. citizenship. These services are provided at no cost and depend on our volunteers. We are proud of our 168 students who have completed our program and are now citizens.

And, as you can imagine, we have a huge waiting list of people who want to take advantage of our services. We need more volunteers to shorten this list!

For more information, call me at 775-888-2021.

Florence G. Phillips

executive director of ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada
