The Capital City Community Band is saluting the Nevada Appeal’s 150th birthday in its Old Favorites Band Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Carson Nugget Hall in the Aspen Building at Western Nevada College.
The band will perform “Washington Post,” composed by John Philip Sousa in 1889, to celebrate the first awards presented by the Washington Post Amateur Authors Association, a club created to encourage district schoolchildren to write — and perhaps to also encourage their parents to buy newspapers. Organizers say the song was chosen to honor the Appeal as a venue in which Carson City youth express themselves.
Baseball season will also be recognized through the performance of “National Game,” also by John Philip Sousa.
Other genres and composers will be featured in the concert, including “Aloha Oe,” “Tribute To Benny Goodman” and “Silverado.”
Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. Reserved seating is available for anyone who’s unable to access stairs by calling 775-883-2219. An elevator is also going to be available to the second floor, where the Nugget Hall is located.
The Capital City Community Band has provided free concerts for Carson City residents and surrounding areas since 1979. New members are always welcome.
