Speaking at Clear Creek. Candidates for Assembly, (Orion) Clemens, Munchton and Edwards, addressed their fellow citizens at Clear Creek and met with a hearty reception. Clear Creek will give an almost unanimous vote for the Union ticket.

130 Years Ago

The divining rod man. State papers made fun of the Appeal because it endorsed the “divining rod” man employed by Kirman. There has been a big strike on the west side of Mount Davidson where he said he would strike it. Assayed at $50,000 a ton (Chronicle).

110 Years Ago

T. B. Rickey escapes death. Rickey met with a runaway accident near Carter’s Station. He was on his way to Antelope Valley when nearing the station, the team took fright at a dog and dashed over the embankment. Rickey was thrown to the ground, the team continued on until the buggy was wrecked, and Rickey ended up walking a few miles — he was covered with blood from many bruises.

70 Years Ago

Nevada Day. Abe Lincoln in the person of Allex McCharles, accompanied by his top sergeant orderly “Jock” Taylor, drew much attention. The Sky Ranch from Reno displayed the first post-war plane. A sack of 1,000 silver dollars was thrown out into the crowd lining the street as the float headed out of town toward Reno.

20 Years Ago

Carson mayor. Marv Teixeira says he won’t run again in 1996. He waited until the last minute to file for the mayoral race in 1988 and 1992, but this time he isn’t procrastinating and won’t run again in 1996.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
