Ford’s Theater. Ladies in Washington are planning to raise $55,000 for a fund to purchase Ford’s Theater. If Congress is unwilling to appropriate the whole amount required for the purchase, they will be willing to make up the whole purchase. They intend to convert the building into a magnificent public library.

130 Years Ago

Candelaria flagpole. They say the camp lost its grip ever since they let Gov. Adams trick them out of the flagpole. He promised them one during the campaign three years ago. They say the only way to remove the hoodoo is to have the governor give them a big flagpole 200 feet high. Its population sadly wavering, a new flagpole would infuse new life into the place.

110 Years Ago

Big nose. Fossil hunters have found in Nevada the remains of a prehistoric sea serpent. It was 40 feet long and had a big nose. Perhaps the “Carson footprints” were not a sagebrush joke after all. (San Francisco News Letter)
