Root for a camel: the Camel & Ostrich Races are this weekend

The annual International Camel & Ostrich Races are kicking off its 57th anniversary in Virginia City Sept. 9-11.

The event, presented by Dolan Automotive Group, includes camel, ostrich, and zebra racing with family-fun zones, live entertainment, vendors, food, and activities.

The Nevada Appeal is participating in this race as Content Coordinator Molly Moser will be racing a camel to the finish line.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and camel rides begin at 11 for $10, at the Virginia City Arena and Fairgrounds on F Street. Races begin at noon daily.

Sunday is Dolan Family Day and the first 100 kids in line get a free camel ride.

Parking is available throughout town, including the fairgrounds for $10. A shuttle also is available for $5.

Tickets can be purchases online at VCCamelRaces.com. General admission for kids is $8 and $12 for adults on Friday, and $15 for Saturday and Sunday. In-arena and VIP packages are available starting at $25 for Friday and $30 for Saturday and Sunday.

Outside food, beverages, pets, and umbrellas are not allowed at the event. Hats and sunscreen are highly recommended.
