Snow (continued from Friday): A bird’s eye view of the Capitol square shows Mr. Oliver Roberts trying to dig out. There had also been quite a fall of “the beautiful” in the neighborhood of Folsom’s wood yard. The men were working hard and had a lane through the drift so that wood can still be delivered to any part of the city. Carson Club is taking advantage of the invitation of the Greater Carson Club to travel to Lake Tahoe and have lunch at Bijou. About 50 people, residents of Carson and Reno, went. An early start afforded visitors a chance to take their time in viewing the beauties — some guests had never made the journey before.

Computer voting: Ormsby County’s new computerized voting enabled the county to tally the primary on Tuesday’s primary. County Clerk William Goni said the system involves card-punch voting and tabulation by computers. This change saved the county $1,000 this year.

Uninsured: Twenty percent of Nevada’s 1.8 million residents lack health insurance. The rate is higher than the national average and stems from costs and lack of plans employers offer.

Cotton and other tales: A young man with a dozen cottontail rabbits in his hand informed the Morning Appeal that those wee timorous beasties were abundant on the mountain side yonder near the railway tunnel. Also, hares of the jackass variety are coming into the market.

Burglar about: A burglar entered the sleeping apartment of Mr. D. Circe, proprietor of the Carson Exchange, between 12 and 1 o’clock. Taken were $400 in coin, $200 in endorsements, a watch and a diamond horseshoe brooch. The sheriff is looking up the affair. The property may be traced.

Suffrage: President Woodrow Wilson called on the Senate to pass the suffrage amendment. As “commander in chief of the army and navy,” he declared that, “We have made partners of women in this war. Shall we not admit them to partnership to suffrage ... This war could not be fought if it had not been for the service of women.”

New Speed Zone: The speed aspect of a portion of Highway 395 between Reno and Carson City will be reduced by the imposition of speed limits where there had been none. A 55-mile-per-hour zone will be established between the city limits and the Bonanza Inn and then increased to 65 from the Inn to where the road elbows left at the sand pits.

Grand Ball: Spooner’s Station 10 miles from this place on Lake Bigler Road will be the sight of a grand ball. Advertisement: “Grand Ball! At Spooner’s Station, on the Lake Bigler Toll Road on Friday Eveng [sic], Oct. 9, 1868, The citizens of Carson and vicinity are cordially invited to attend. Tickets, (including supper,) $5, Mitchell Spooner, Proprietor.”

Hall of Fame: Bill Dolan will be recognized for his career in business with the Nevada Appeal and inducted along with 34 people into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame. For more than 50 years, Dolan has been pumping out a column called “Past Pages” that has kept the residents of Carson City informed about what has happened in the past. He said, “I think I’ve done just about everything except run the presses.”
Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
