Doc. Sharp: The dentist has got back to town after a two months’ whaling voyage on the waters of the Carson. He has been fatting himself on turkeys and trout (caught by nitro glycerin) and has had his breast plate mended. The Doctor has come back in the prosecution of his profession and purchased stock, stand, fixtures and goods — his office adjoining the Post Office.

Brief mention: Hundreds of Esquimaux (sic) are said to have starved to death owing to the wanton destruction of the walrus by whalers.

A new kind of corn has been discovered in the mountains of Georgia. The husks are a bright purple, and are used by housewives to make a dye.

Society gossip: The Ladies of the Presbyterian Church will give Christmas Eve entertainment in the Opera House with recitations, music tableaus and tree. Miss Barrett, teacher at the Orphans Home will take the leading part.

President nearly recovered: President Woodrow Wilson is rapidly recovering from his nervous breakdown and is now engaged in writing his message to Congress during an extensive program of domestic legislation and preparing a message to the industrial commission. He is also planning the ratification of the peace treaty and the League of Nations…

Photo caption: Off to warmer pastures — Washoe Valley rancher Frank List and his son, Robert, Carson City district attorney, were in the saddle early this morning to herd their cattle into corrals to load them into a large van for transfer to the List’s Stillwater ranch, outside Fallon. The Lists have run the Washoe Valley operation since 1951. More than 70 head of cattle were moved to Stillwater where the climate will be less severe during the winter months.

Tinkerers: The clock tower in the old federal building (Laxalt Building) was being restored. Two gentlemen, Lee Carter and Bill Hartman, were hoping to get the clock in its tower back into operation as well. They got permission from the state and found themselves climbing the narrow stairway leading to the fifth floor, evaluating the clocks parts and restoring it.

Damage to circus men and horses: John Wilson’s circus was on board a vessel going up the coast from Portland, Oregon to Olympia, Washington Territory when the vessel was hit with a heavy gale. His trained mare “Black Bess” was saved, being indebted for her life to her own sagacity. When the steamer was lurching so fearfully, she would grasp the railing and hold on with her teeth, displaying almost human intelligence to save herself.

Brief mention: The Thanksgiving ball at the Opera House promises to be a gala affair. The best music has been engaged.

A man just in from Bodie says his nose began to bleed the day he got there from the high altitude. A friend of his says the man is a liar.

Measles have broken out in the Juvenile Pinafore troupe, the managers are hastening home with the children and engagements cancelled.

Photo caption: Returns to prison—Leonard T. Fristoe, 77, is escorted inside the Nevada State Prison confines by correctional Sgt. R. E. Hofer, accompanied by Warden Carl Hocker upon his return to the prison from which he escaped 46 years ago. Fristoe had served two and a half years of a life sentence for slaying two members of a sheriff’s posse when he made his escape.

Terrible destitution: Antone Barnia, a 78-year-old Frenchman, living for some years in a miserable little cabin on Indian Flat with another Frenchman, the same age, managed to eke out an existence by hunting or washing out a little ground and panning out a few bits. He disappeared one night, barefooted and was gone for three days and nights. Had he not been found, death would have relieved him of suffering. These men are beyond the district of our Benevolent Society, but it would be well for the Society to look after them so they do not suffer during the winter. (Nevada Transcript)

The Bible and the V. & T. R. R.: Mr. Burkholder, the agent of the Nevada Bible Society, is engaged in the good work of distributing his wares. Mr. Burkholder informs the Appeal reporter that at the last meeting of the Society it was decided to donate a dozen copies each of the Bible and New Testament to the Orphans’ Home. One Bible was also left at each of the stations along the line of the Virginia & Truckee railroad. The bibles were presented for the purpose of furnishing the employees at the stations with food for pious meditation.

Plumbers in demand: Calls were sent out to the plumber this morning to patch up bursted pipes in the houses of many Carson families. Last night was the coldest experienced this winter and few were prepared. Thermometers did not agree as to the cold, but all over town they registered from 5 to 10 below.
