The federal Environmental Protection Agency has fined an Ohio company that has a Reno office for selling devices that defeat emission controls in diesel powered vehicles.
Autosales Inc. will pay $600,000 for selling what are commonly known as “defeat devices” that disable or modify vehicle emission controls.
In addition to Reno, the company has locations across the country.
The devices also known as “straight pipes,” violate the Clean Air Act by bypassing or rendering inoperative emission control systems in those vehicles.
The EPA announcement describes Autosales Inc. as a major supplier of aftermarket automotive and truck equipment by mail order. Officials urged anyone who suspects someone is manufacturing, selling or installing illegal emission devices to contact the EPA at tampering@epa.gov.
