Carson service clubs award more than $33,000 in scholarships

Two Carson City service clubs have awarded more than $33,000 in scholarship money.

Rotary Club of Carson City handed out a record $20,000 in scholarships to high school and college students.

Kiwanis presented six students with $13,750.

Jamie Schulenberg received the Dr. Bill Van Patten award of $2,250. Schulenberg, senior class secretary and yearbook editor, held down a job while earning a 3.8 grade point average and working as a peer counselor.

Kathy Hanselman won the $1,500 Victor Goodwin scholarship and Vicki Parsons won the $1,500 President's scholarship.

Three students won Marilyn Elaine Kiwanis scholarships of $4,000 each.

They were James Hamtak, Jr., Misty Kimball and Jeremy Leatham.

Other Rotary winners were:

Carson High School students Sarah Brundle, Sarah Buck, Abbey Gardner, Dawn Haddan, Ann Libby, Shannon Pistone, Nick Reinhardt, Erin Reitnauer, Arlo Schenk, Carrie Stair and Brooke Yerke all received awards from Rotary.

Ben Fleming received the $750 scholarship and Sarah Buck and Vicki Parsons each received a scholarship of $500 from Kiwanis.
