OAKLAND, Calif. - A man accused by federal authorities of running a major interstate gun ring has pleaded guilty to illegal trafficking of over 500 guns.
Sean Twomey, 31, of Hayward, admitted six felony charges Monday, including dealing firearms without a license, making false statements during firearms purchases and selling guns to a known felon. He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 20.
At the time of Twomey's arrest in May, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said the guns he bought and resold were used by criminals in at least three states. The ATF said it was ''the largest ongoing gun trafficking case in the United States.''
Prosecutors said Tuesday that Twomey admitted altering an expired federal firearms license and using it to buy over 500 guns, which eventually were sold on the streets. He also admitted altering or obliterating the serial numbers of guns.
