Carson's first convicted deadbeat dad ends up in prison

A deadbeat dad, on probation since 1998 for failing to pay $94,323 in back child support, was sent to prison this week for violating the terms of his probation by drinking and failing to pay any restitution for the past six months.

William Mantik, 51, will spend the next two to five years behind bars.

His was the first felony case of failure to pay child support prosecuted in Carson City. Mantik was convicted in 1998 of failing to pay child support for his three children from January 1994 to November 1996.

At that time he was sentenced to 90 days in the Carson City jail, given a suspended sentence of 24 to 60 months in prison and put on probation for five years. He was also ordered to pay restitution.

On Dec. 28, 2001, officers searched Mantik's Reno home and found a weapon and alcohol, according to Kim Evans, public information officers for the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

Evans said up until July 2001, Mantik was on schedule, repaying his arrearages in the amount of $100 a month. No payment was received since then, she said.
