Claire J. 'Jim' Austin

A memorial service for Claire J. "Jim" Austin, 81, a Carson City resident for the past 43 years, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Austin died Nov. 20, 2004, in Carson City. He was born May 14, 1923, in Waco, Neb., to Clarence J. and Alice M. Austin.

He attended school in Nebraska.

Mr. Austin was a printer. He owned Sierra Nevada Printing from 1961-1977. After retiring, he worked for the Senior Center, the City Clerk's Office, Voters Registration Division, was a crossing guard for Fritsch School and was a courier. He attended Genoa Community Church.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 11th Airborne, 187th Regiment. He received a Purple Heart in the Philippines and was part of the occupation of Japan.

He was preceded in death by a sister and brother.

Among his survivors are son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Judy Austin of Carson City; daughter and son-in-law, Dale and the Rev. Karry Crites of Reno; sister-in-law Wynona Austin of Sacramento; grandchildren Shelli Long and Chris Austin, both of Carson City and Tina Yount, Cary Crites and Austyn Crites, all of Reno; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Margaret Bulmer of Carson City.

Inurnment will be in the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.
