Insane. We heard on the street yesterday that a brother of General Cradlebaugh, living on the Carson river, had become insane and will be sent to the Asylum at Woodbridge, Calif. Sad thoughts today present themselves to the minds of those who know Johnny Stewart. This is the date fixed for his hanging at Aurora.

130 years ago

The steamship Nevada, which arrived yesterday in New York, brought 416 Mormon immigrants in the steerage, and 22 Mormon missionaries in the cabin. Missionary Lewis said the Mormons represent nearly every class of Europeans except Irish. He admitted there was no use to try to convert the Irish, but added: “The Irish are not of the steady-going, industrious disposition that we are to handle. The elders of the Church say they are satisfied Irish converts would bring us into trouble. We always keep away from Ireland for that reason.”

100 years ago

A five-ton Pierce Arrow motor truck was mysteriously destroyed last week at Ione, Nye County, according to advances received yesterday. The truck was the property of the Nevada Cinnabar company and was used in the transportation of supplies from Austin to Ione. It is believed a box of dynamite had been placed beneath the truck.

70 years ago

Typewriters will be removed from the rationing Saturday, April 22, Carroll Henderson, Nevada district mileage rationing representative, said this week. Typewriters went on the rationing list in March 1942.

50 years ago

Gov. Grant Sawyer of Nevada today accepted an invitation to appear on the Steve Allen Show, a popular national television program.

30 years ago

Kerri Smith is seeking her first Nevada championship after a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke last year. She is also hoping for a scholarship to Northern Arizona University.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
