Protect and respect our seniors

Recently, three friends of mine who have regularly attended the senior center had their homes burglarized; fortunately while they were away from home. I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition, several seniors have told me they have been the victims of Internet and telephone scams.

These elderly people grew up in an era when crimes against seniors were not tolerated. In those days even the mafia respected the rights of seniors. If an elderly widower of a veteran in her eighties, who lived alone, was criminally attacked, the whole community would rise up in indignation. Today she was just another easy target.

The criminals who commit such acts against seniors should be rooted out and punished, even if they are juveniles or illegals. Come on, people, let’s get back to showing some level of respect for our elderly citizens and protect them in a manner in which they deserve.
