Sunday school concert: The Presbyterian Church had a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen at the school concert. The little folks sang several hymns and were accompanied by Mr. Dorr, on the melodeon. Considerable familiarity with the Bible was displayed by all the children.

State of money: The evil that is Nevada’s greatest injury is that hundreds of men drawing incomes from property in Nevada live elsewhere. The evil is increasing yearly and contributes to drain the state of money that should be kept and spent at home. (Times Review)

Fire: The V&T crew had a hot time with a blazing box car. It caught fire, was detached and yanked to Reno, where the fire department squirted water on it. Total loss.

Shaggy dog: Wanted, one barber. Virginia City has been without a barber for three weeks. A barber did come around once a week but hasn’t been seen lately. Father Paul Meinecke of St. Mary’s Church says some of the men are beginning to look like shaggy dogs.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
