North Lake Tahoe

Notable members of the community, local businesses and organizations were recognized for their contributions to the North Lake Tahoe community on April 6 during the 63rd annual Community Awards Dinner. Hosted by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association, this year’s event took place inside the Grand Sierra ballroom at The Resort at Squaw Creek.

RSCVA Room Tax and Occupancy Statistics

The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority released its Room Tax and Occupancy Statistics for February. In the report, RSCVA found that taxable room revenues for the month of $22,714,041 are above prior year by 1.3 percent.

Cash occupied room nights of 249,799 are below prior year by 2.1 percent. Comp occupied room nights of 66,643 are below prior year by 8.9 percent and 28-day occupied room nights of 119,286 are above prior year by nine percent.

Total occupied rooms for the month of 435,728 are .4 percent below the prior year.

Nevada Mining Series

The Nevada Mining Series, a four-part documentary highlighting the past and present of the Silver State’s oldest high-tech industry, was named a recipient of the Bronze Telly Award in March, which recognizes the year’s best TV, cable, digital, streaming and non-broadcast productions.

Winnemucca Mine Rescue Contest

Mine rescue teams from all over the West gathered in Winnemucca, March 13-16, for the Nevada Regional Mine Rescue Competition. Over the course of the four-day event, teams competed in different rescue scenarios designed to test competitors both physically and mentally.

Several Nevada mining groups were represented at the event including Newmont, Barrick and Klondex.

Nevada State Mining Championships

The Nevada State Mining Championships will take place May 27-28 in Tonopah during the 47th annual Jim Butler Days Celebration May 22-29. Contestants will compete for cash prizes in each event, including $100 per inch drilled in the men’s and women’s single jack contest. Winners of the drilling and mucking contests received silver hammers and shovels.

A junior and youth mucking contest will be held on Sunday, May 28 at 10 a.m.

Construction Wage Survey

The Office of the Nevada Labor Commissioner released the 2017–2018 Construction Wage Survey for contractors throughout the state. Completed surveys are due by 5 p.m. on July 17, in order to be included in the process for determining the prevailing wage rates, which will be posted on Oct. 1, as required by Nevada law.

Itronics

Itronics, a diversified fertilizer and silver producing green technology company, summarized its operations and diversification progress and announced sales results for the 12 months ended Dec. 31. Full year sales decreased 22 percent on a 20 percent decrease in fertilizer sales.

Total revenues for the 12 months ended Dec. 31 were $1,433,742 compared to $1,842,041 in 2015, a decrease of 22 percent. GOLD’n GRO fertilizer sales decreased by 20 percent. Most of the sales decline occurred in the first half of 2016. The company had previously reported that 2016 was a difficult year due to adverse weather and difficult market conditions for California growers, a large market for the company’s GOLD’n GRO fertilizers.

In the first quarter of 2017, the company’s subsidiary, Whitney & Whitney, has staked lode claims at the Fulstone Project to expand coverage of the high grade zinc anomaly it announced in 2015. Discussions intended to identify a joint venture development partner for the Fulstone Project are ongoing.

H & M

H & M, a fashion retailer, opened a new store at the Outlets at Sparks on April 6. The new location offers collections for women, men and teens to separate “store within a store” sections for accessories. This location also carries collections for newborns to 14-year-olds.

Nevada Donor Network

In honor of Donate Life Month, Nevada Donor Network kicked off a month-long challenge with Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus in Downtown Reno. Employees of the three casinos are asked to register as organ, eye and tissue donors during the month of April.

Labor underutilization

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor released information on labor underutilization. In the news release, BLS reported that in 2016, the broadest measure of labor underutilization was 12.2 percent in Nevada, compared to the U.S. average of 9.6 percent.

In 2016, Nevada had 83,700 unemployed residents, and another 73,300 were employed part time for economic reasons, which is also known as involuntary part time. 17,700 Nevadans were marginally attached to the labor force in 2016, meaning they were searching for a job during the past year, but were not counted as unemployed in the official unemployment rate. Another 6,600 discouraged workers were not looking for work because they felt there were no jobs available to them. The Technical Careers Job Fair will take place at the William N. Pennington Applied Technology Center at Truckee Meadows Community College on April 19. Home NV Real Estate Services is hosting a free document shredding event on April 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 321 S. Arlington Ave. in Reno. Shredding is done on site and is provided by American Document Destruction. Donations are encouraged.

An undisclosed tenant leased 2,291 square feet in Reno. Tony Fritsche of ArchCrest Commercial Partners represented the landlord, Greg Street Investors, LLC.

The Legado Trust:

The buyer purchased a 12-unit assemblage of three apartment buildings at 1400, 1404, 1408 Como Street in Carson City for $1,100,000. Trevor Richardson and Tom Fennell of Dickson Commercial Group represented the undisclosed seller.

Scott Corridan Design

Scott Corridan, an interior designer and founder/owner of Scott Corridan Design with an office in Lake Tahoe, had his latest project, a turnkey full-furnished St. Helena townhome, brought in a record price of $925,000 after being listed on the market for just two weeks.

CREW & NAIOP CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

Registration and sponsorships are now available for the CREW & NAIOP Charity Golf Tournament slated for June 16 at Lakeridge Golf Course.

Proceeds will benefit the Crisis Call Center.

The tournament is a four-man scramble, shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. and is limited to 144 golfers. The cost is $175 per person and includes green fees, continental breakfast, cart, putting contest, shirt, practice balls, beverages, lunch, games, awards, and more.
