Library hosts Kwanzaa, Friends sell calendars

MINDEN - The Douglas County Public Library will host a Kwanzaa celebration for the community at the library this week.

"Join us on Dec. 22 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a time of learning and sharing," said librarian Carol Rapacz. "Stories and poems will explain the meaning and symbols of Kwanzaa."

Refreshments will be served.

Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits," was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana "Ron" Karenga as a unique African American celebration. It is based upon seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

Kwanzaa is officially celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. It is not a religious or political holiday. It is a cultural celebration.

"Bring your family and friends," Rapacz said. "All ages are welcome."

The Friends of the Library organization is selling the 2000 Book Lover's Calendar for $5 at the Douglas County library. The page-a-day calendar sells at retail stores for $9.95.

"This is a perfect stocking stuffer for your book-lover friends and relatives," said Rapacz.
