Burlington Coat Factory in south Carson City is set to close doors April 19, a store spokesperson confirmed Monday.

The person, who did not want to be publicly identified, told the Appeal the store’s 22 employees were given the option of transferring to the Reno or Sparks store or receiving a severance package.

The store has been in operation for more than 15 years at the site of the old Walmart building, having opened in August 2008, the spokesperson said. They added that the store met a need in the community by offering affordable pricing.

The closure is due to lease issues regarding the 70,000 square-foot space, the spokesperson said.

In August 2007, the Carson City Board of Supervisors approved $2 million in redevelopment funds for improving the space, which had been vacant after Walmart left in 2002. The property is owned by Carson Southgate LLC run by Robert C. Rothe, according to the Carson City Assessor’s website.

According to City Manager Nancy Paulson, there was no repayment required for the redevelopment incentive as long as the store stayed in business for 10 years.

“The 10 years ended March 1, 2018,” according to Paulson.

At the time of the deal, city officials expected Burlington to add $15 million annually to the city’s taxable sales.

• It wasn’t all bad news Monday. Jersey Mike’s Subs appeared to be opening at Topsy Lane near the former Five Guys suite. Interior remodeling was evident at 956 Topsy Lane Suite 102, between what is now America First Credit Union and Absolute Dental. A sign for the sub sandwich chain was visible above the storefront, though an exact opening date was unknown.
